The superintendent of Middletown Public Schools, Alberto Váquez Matos, is facing scrutiny following his arrest on July 29, 2023, in Florida on charges of driving under the influence (DUI). The 51-year-old administrator was cited by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office after he allegedly refused to submit to a breathalyzer test during a traffic stop at approximately 11:25 p.m.
According to records from the Hillsborough County Clerk of Courts, Matos was also accused of holding driver’s licenses in both Florida and Connecticut. The citation issued to him indicates that his refusal to take the breathalyzer could lead to the suspension of his Florida driver’s license for one year. Matos has pleaded not guilty to the charges and previously had a court hearing scheduled last week, but he requested a new date.
The implications of this incident extend beyond the legal arena. The Middletown Board of Education is set to convene for a special meeting to discuss Matos’ employment status within the district. The agenda indicates that school officials may take “possible action” following an anticipated executive session.
A spokesperson for the Middletown Public Schools stated, “The district does not comment on individual personnel matters,” reflecting the sensitivity of the situation. Matos’ attorney has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the case.
Matos joined the school district in 2021, initially serving as the acting superintendent before being appointed to the position permanently in 2022. His leadership has been pivotal in the district, which is now facing a challenging period as it navigates the implications of this legal matter.
As the board prepares for its meeting, the community will be watching closely to see how this situation unfolds, and what impact it may have on the district’s leadership moving forward.
