Across Massachusetts, approximately 43.2% of the high school class of 2026 has submitted the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for the 2026-27 academic year. While this figure is relatively strong compared to national averages, it highlights a significant challenge: many students have yet to complete the application.
Tom Graf, the executive director of the Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority (MEFA), emphasized the importance of completing the FAFSA. He stated, “Completing the FAFSA opens up opportunities for students to access available federal, state, and institutional financial aid.” He further noted that students who do not complete the form risk missing out on financial aid and are significantly less likely to enroll in postsecondary education, even if they meet academic requirements.
Addressing Completion Disparities
Despite Massachusetts’s commendable ranking in FAFSA submissions, completion rates vary significantly among different student populations within the state. To address this issue, the Healey-Driscoll Administration has introduced a FAFSA Completion Dashboard. This tool will provide regular updates on FAFSA submission rates across Massachusetts, breaking down the data by school, district, and student demographics.
The dashboard aims to assist MEFA in closing completion gaps by identifying areas where additional support is necessary. Noe Ortega, Commissioner of Higher Education, remarked, “Too many students leave money and opportunity on the table by not applying for financial aid. This dashboard makes FAFSA completion data accessible in a way that will advance the college access efforts of our state, schools, and non-profit partners.”
Pedro Martinez, Elementary and Secondary Education Commissioner, added, “Completing the FAFSA is an important first step toward college enrollment, and postsecondary education is critical for students to be successful in Massachusetts.”
Resources for Students and Families
To further enhance FAFSA completion rates, MEFA is providing free resources for students and families. These include:
– **MEFA’s One-On-One Service**: Families can schedule individual appointments for guidance on the college financial aid process. To request an appointment, visit MEFA’s website.
– **Online Tools and Resources**: Additional assistance is available from MEFA’s website and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’s financial aid page.
Educators, counselors, and families are encouraged to utilize these resources to improve FAFSA completion rates statewide, ensuring that more students can access available college financial aid.
Established under Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 15C, MEFA has operated since 1982 with the mission of helping students and families in Massachusetts access and afford higher education. Through education programs, tax-advantaged savings plans, competitive loans, and expert guidance, MEFA is committed to supporting the independence, growth, and success of students and families throughout the Commonwealth.
