Lynn’s First Church of Nazarene will host its third annual backpack and school supplies giveaway this Saturday, August 9, 2023, from 11:00 to 14:00. This community event aims to provide essential school supplies to local students, with approximately 100 backpacks prepared for distribution. The backpacks have been generously donated by the First Church of Nazarene in partnership with the Juneteenth Northshore Association and local Girl Scouts troops.
Each backpack will include a variety of supplies, such as a notebook, pencil case, pencils, pens, erasers, and colored pencils. The Girl Scouts contributed to this initiative by allocating a portion of their cookie sales proceeds to purchase additional supplies.
Gina Cordy, Pastor of the First Church of Nazarene, emphasized the importance of this event, stating, “Backpacks and school supplies can be costly for a lot of families. We wanted to give what is needed at a time when it would be needed.”
The event carries additional significance for the community. Nicole McClain, Lynn Councilor at Large and President of the Juneteenth Northshore Association, highlighted the emotional impact on students. “Students need to feel a sense of belonging. If everyone else around them has what they need to start the school year, and they don’t, they feel othered,” she explained. McClain reinforced the necessity of ensuring that every student begins the school year feeling welcomed and prepared.
Collaborative Efforts and Community Activities
This year, the First Church of Nazarene is collaborating with the non-profit organization Centerboard Lynn Family Resource Center to host a food drive alongside the school supply giveaway. They are accepting donations of non-perishable food items, further supporting local families in need.
A range of activities will be available to keep children entertained during the event. Organizers plan to offer sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and an arts and crafts station. A community cookout will be provided by local resident Steve Thayer, with food manufacturer Old Neighborhood donating two cases of hot dogs for the occasion. Members of the Lynn Police Department will also be present to foster a sense of community and safety.
Olivia Grinstead, Program Director at Centerboard Lynn Family Resource Center, expressed the goal of creating a welcoming environment. “We want people to feel comfortable and welcome. The main priority is bringing a sense of belonging and togetherness for the families,” she said regarding the various activities planned for the day.
The giveaway will continue until supplies last, ensuring that as many students as possible receive the help they need as they head back to school. This annual event not only provides essential supplies but also reinforces community bonds, highlighting the collective effort to support local families.
