A new center dedicated to high-demand skilled trades has officially opened in downtown Lockhart, Texas, following the approval from local voters to join the Austin Community College (ACC) district. This facility, encompassing 20,000 square feet and located in the historic Ford Building on W. San Antonio Street, represents a significant investment in workforce development for the community.
During the opening event, which took place last week, hundreds of residents toured the renovated facility. They were welcomed by Lockhart High School’s mariachi band and cheerleading team, creating an atmosphere of celebration. The center prominently displays ACC’s name in purple lettering, symbolizing its commitment to education and community service.
Focus on High-Demand Skills
The newly established center aims to address the workforce needs of Lockhart by offering short-term programs in areas such as HVAC, automotive, plumbing, construction, and welding. Russell Lowery-Hart, ACC Chancellor, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “What this space represents is our promise, as ACC – our promise to deliver high-quality programs, very strong support services and a long-term investment.” This investment is crucial as the city anticipates a population growth that could see its current 15,000 residents double by 2040.
Voters approved the ACC annexation proposal with over 61% in favor in 2024, allowing residents access to lower tuition rates and free education for high school graduates. Soon after, the city acquired the Ford Building for $2.8 million. The center not only provides immediate training opportunities but also paves the way for adults to pursue further education through ACC’s certificate, associate, and select bachelor’s degree options, as noted by Troy DeFrates, interim dean of design, manufacturing, construction and applied technologies.
Community Impact and Future Growth
Classes at the center will primarily be offered during evenings to accommodate working adults. Programs are designed to last between two to five months, allowing participants to quickly transition into higher-wage careers. DeFrates remarked, “It’s very affordable, and I know that these training programs provide opportunity for a career job you wouldn’t have if you didn’t have access to (ACC).”
The demand for ACC’s programming has already surged, with over 600 new students from Lockhart Independent School District enrolling at ACC in the year following the annexation. This includes 130 dual-credit students and 160 students benefiting from free tuition.
Advocates like Nick Metzler, who spearheaded the political action committee for ACC’s arrival, expressed their hopes for the future. “This is the first step in providing something that we didn’t have,” Metzler stated, reflecting on the limited options for trade education in the past.
As Lockhart continues to grow, the need for skilled labor will remain a priority. According to the city’s economic development data, while 62% of residents have completed high school, only 12% hold a bachelor’s degree, and nearly 21% have attended college without obtaining a degree.
ACC is also focused on helping adults in the community consider returning to school. Donald Tracy, dean of ACC’s continuing education programs, highlighted that approximately 80% of ACC’s continuing education students are aged 25 and above. “It’s not just about the kids, it’s about the parents too,” he noted, pointing out the transformative potential of education on families’ economic stability.
Local leaders, including Hoppy Haden, Caldwell County Judge, voiced their support for the center’s potential to strengthen families and attract businesses. Haden remarked, “Access to these programs helps strengthen families and long-term economic stability. It gives us the opportunity for generations of our families to stay here.”
As the center opens its doors, officials are optimistic about its future. DeFrates concluded, “It’s just the beginning. We’ll grow. We are the community’s college.” The enthusiasm surrounding the new facility illustrates a shared commitment to enhancing educational opportunities in Lockhart, paving the way for a more skilled and prosperous workforce.
