Levi Bachmeier Takes Charge as North Dakota’s Education Leader

North Dakota’s education landscape has officially welcomed a new leader. On November 24, 2025, Levi Bachmeier officially took office as the state’s new State School Superintendent, following his appointment by Governor Kelly Armstrong on October 21, 2025. Bachmeier will oversee the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction, which is responsible for the education of students across more than 220 public and nonpublic school districts statewide.

Bachmeier steps into this crucial role with a clear vision focused on nurturing well-rounded and patriotic citizens. His leadership will guide the state’s educational objectives, emphasizing not only academic achievement but also the physical and mental well-being of students. A key component of his agenda is the state’s Choice Ready initiative, which aims to prepare students for successful transitions into college, careers, or military service upon graduation.

In his inaugural address, Bachmeier highlighted the importance of fostering an environment where students can excel. He expressed a commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and ensuring that the needs of all students are met. Under his stewardship, the Department of Public Instruction will work towards creating a supportive framework that prioritizes both academic and personal development.

Bachmeier’s experience in education positions him well for this role. He previously held various educational leadership positions, where he demonstrated a strong commitment to improving student outcomes. His approach emphasizes collaboration with educators, parents, and community stakeholders, ensuring that policies and programs reflect the needs of the diverse student population across North Dakota.

As he embarks on this new chapter, Bachmeier aims to engage with local communities, seeking input and feedback to inform educational strategies. He recognizes that the challenges facing schools today require innovative solutions and strong partnerships. By fostering open communication, he hopes to build a cohesive approach to education that resonates with all stakeholders.

The Choice Ready initiative, a cornerstone of Bachmeier’s strategy, will provide students with the tools necessary to navigate their post-graduation paths effectively. This initiative encapsulates a comprehensive framework, addressing academic readiness, career exploration, and military options. By equipping students with relevant skills and knowledge, the program seeks to empower young individuals to make informed decisions about their futures.

As North Dakota moves forward under Bachmeier’s leadership, the focus will remain on ensuring that students are not only academically prepared but also socially and emotionally supported. His commitment to fostering a holistic educational environment is expected to resonate throughout the state’s school districts, paving the way for positive change and growth.

With a clear vision and a dedication to student success, Levi Bachmeier’s tenure as State School Superintendent promises to be a transformative period for education in North Dakota. The coming months will reveal how his initiatives impact the educational landscape and the lives of students across the state.
