March marks the celebration of National School Breakfast Week, highlighting the vital role school breakfast programs play in enhancing student outcomes. In Virginia Beach, Larkspur Middle School stands out for its exemplary breakfast initiative, which has resulted in nearly 60% of its students participating. This impressive figure positions the school among the highest in breakfast participation rates for middle and high school programs across the state.
Research underscores the significance of school breakfast, indicating that students who partake in these programs exhibit improved academic performance, better attendance, and reduced hunger. A major contributor to Larkspur’s success is Danielle Smallwood, the Cafeteria Manager, alongside her dedicated team and the supportive leadership of Principal Whitney Szoke and Rachel Amato, the Virginia Beach Director of Food Services.
During a recent visit, the cafeteria staff efficiently served over 800 breakfasts in just half an hour, ensuring that students began their day well-nourished and prepared to learn. Such efficiency is commendable, particularly when considering the tight schedule schools often face.
Strategic innovations have also played a crucial role in boosting participation. The school’s Breakfast After the Bell program implements breakfast carts throughout the building, enhancing accessibility for students. Moreover, menu creativity has led to the introduction of appealing, protein-rich options such as “Beach Bake” egg stratas and breakfast quesadillas, which resonate with student preferences and contribute to increased participation rates.
The efforts of the Larkspur Middle team exemplify a commitment to fostering a breakfast program that the community can take pride in. According to Sarah Steely, director of No Kid Hungry Virginia, such initiatives are pivotal in addressing food insecurity and supporting student well-being.
The success of Larkspur Middle School illustrates how effective leadership, innovative strategies, and community support can transform school breakfast programs into essential components of student success. As schools across the nation recognize the importance of these initiatives, Larkspur serves as a model for others aiming to enhance their breakfast offerings and, ultimately, their students’ academic achievements.
