KHS student Ayazhan Kabylgazizova recently shared insights about her home country of Kazakhstan with fourth graders at a local school in Hawthorne. This presentation was part of the International Education Week in November 2023, an initiative aimed at promoting global awareness and cultural exchange.
During her visit, Kabylgazizova not only spoke about Kazakhstan’s rich culture and traditions but also introduced the students to a popular snack from her homeland. This hands-on experience allowed the children to engage with the material in a memorable way.
Kabylgazizova is a participant in the For Future Leaders Exchange Program (FLEX), facilitated by the ASSE International Exchange Student Program. This highly competitive scholarship is funded by the U.S. Department of State and aims to foster mutual understanding between the U.S. and Eurasia. Each year, over 35,000 students compete for FLEX scholarships, which provide the opportunity to study in the United States for an entire academic year while living with volunteer host families.
The FLEX program not only helps students develop leadership skills but also exposes them to American society and values. In return, these students serve as cultural ambassadors, sharing their own heritage with their American peers. Kabylgazizova has been living with host parents Kris and Lori Brewer in Keokuk as part of her exchange experience.
The program was established based on the vision of former Senator Bill Bradley, who believed that fostering personal connections between young people from different countries is essential for long-lasting peace and understanding. The FLEX initiative encourages participants to perform community service, reinforcing the importance of active citizenship and engagement in their host communities.
By presenting to the fourth graders, Kabylgazizova exemplifies the goals of the FLEX program. Her presentation not only educated young students about Kazakhstan but also highlighted the value of cultural exchange and international collaboration. Events like this are crucial in developing global citizens who appreciate diversity and the importance of understanding different cultures.
