Former Student Advocates for Benjamin Speed’s School Committee Candidacy

Former student Simon French has publicly endorsed Benjamin Speed for a position on the Bangor School Committee, highlighting Speed’s impact as an educator. In a letter to the editor, French emphasized Speed’s dedication and ability to foster creativity in the classroom, noting that his guidance significantly influenced French’s career path.

French, who studied under Speed for three years at Hancock County Technical Center, described him as a transformative educator, stating, “I truly wouldn’t be where I am in my career today without his guidance and belief in his students.” He praised Speed’s approach to teaching, which made learning feel accessible and engaging for all students, regardless of their skill levels.

Support for Speed’s Candidacy

In his letter, French elaborated on Speed’s unique ability to connect with students, asserting that “every student felt seen and valued.” He noted that Speed took the time to understand each individual, enhancing their educational experience. French currently serves as the director of creative for Maine Athletics and as a house photographer for Waterfront Concerts. He credits Speed’s teaching methods for his success in these roles and continues to apply the concepts learned during high school in his professional life.

French expressed confidence that Speed would bring this same dedication to the Bangor School Committee, stating, “He is someone who truly understands what it means to invest in students, empower teachers, and make education meaningful.” This endorsement underscores the belief among some community members that Speed’s experience and values align with the needs of Bangor’s educational system.

Election Details and Call for Submissions

The upcoming election on November 4, 2023, has prompted significant engagement from local residents. The Bangor Daily News will cease accepting letters and opinion columns related to the election on October 29, 2023. As such, community members are encouraged to voice their opinions and support for candidates ahead of this deadline, contributing to the democratic process in Bangor.

French’s endorsement of Speed adds to the growing conversation around the future of education in Bangor, as constituents prepare to make informed decisions at the polls. The involvement of passionate former students like French highlights the importance of choosing candidates who prioritize the educational needs of the community.
