Dr. Earl Richardson, the influential former president of Morgan State University, passed away at the age of 81, as confirmed by the university. His tenure as the ninth president began in 1984 and lasted for 25 years, during which he was instrumental in the expansion and transformation of the institution.
Under Richardson’s leadership, Morgan State University saw significant growth in both its academic offerings and student enrollment. The number of doctoral programs increased from one to 15, alongside the establishment of several new schools, including the School of Public and Community Health, the School of Social Work, and the School of Architecture. Enrollment more than doubled, marking a pivotal shift from a small liberal arts institution to a comprehensive doctoral urban research campus.
David Wilson, the current president of Morgan State University, praised Richardson’s legacy, stating, “Dr. Richardson’s commitment to excellence and his ability to inspire confidence restored faith in the University at a time when its future was uncertain.” Wilson emphasized that Richardson’s leadership left behind a legacy characterized by perseverance, innovation, and a strong belief in the transformative power of education.
Richardson’s influence extended beyond Morgan State University. His career in Maryland higher education spanned over 45 years, including executive roles at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and the University System of Maryland. After stepping down as president in 2009, he devoted his efforts to teaching higher education administration, focusing on governance and minority-serving institutions. He also contributed to the Robert M. Bell Center for Civil Rights in Education, addressing legal issues affecting Historically Black Institutions.
“Dr. Richardson will forever be remembered as a towering figure in Morgan’s history—an exceptional leader whose life’s work profoundly shaped this institution and enriched the lives of countless students, faculty, alumni, and friends of the University,” Wilson added. “Morgan is stronger today because of Earl S. Richardson, and for that, we are eternally grateful.”
Richardson’s passing marks the end of an era for Morgan State University, leaving a substantial impact on the academic community and the lives of those who were part of the institution during his tenure. His contributions will continue to resonate within the university and beyond.
