Fitchburg State Launches Direct Admissions Program for Local Students

Fitchburg State University has introduced a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing access to higher education for local students. Dubbed the Fitchburg Promise, this direct admissions program guarantees enrollment for eligible high school students in Fitchburg. President Donna Hodge announced the initiative last fall, emphasizing its potential to transform educational opportunities in the region.

The inaugural participants in this program, high school seniors Ben Lor from Fitchburg High School and Molly Demeo from Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School, have already committed to attending the university in the fall of 2026. “Together, we are building a future where every Fitchburg student knows: College isn’t just possible — if you’ve got the will and the commitment, it’s promised,” Hodge stated. Lor and Demeo’s early commitment highlights the program’s success in fostering a supportive pathway to higher education.

Under the new initiative, any Fitchburg resident who maintains a minimum GPA of 2.25 at one of the city’s high schools will be guaranteed admission to Fitchburg State, with the possibility of attending tuition and fee-free, provided they remain in good standing. The program aims to eliminate barriers to college admissions, allowing local students to envision a future where higher education is within reach.

In collaboration with local high schools, including Goodrich Academy and St. Bernard’s High School, this initiative is designed to connect students with faculty and resources early on. “Beyond simply providing admissions, the program connects students with faculty experts in classes designed to spark their curiosity,” said Franca Barricelli, Acting Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The program represents a significant commitment to democratizing access to education, particularly for first-generation college students.

The Direct Admissions program eliminates application fees and simplifies the admissions process. Students can participate in Direct Admissions Discovery Days, where they engage in campus activities, meet professors, and explore their academic interests. By filling out a straightforward online opt-in form as early as their freshman year, students can take the first step towards their future.

Financial incentives further enhance the appeal of the program. Participants who reside in Fitchburg benefit from $0 in-state tuition and fees, along with an annual $1,500 housing scholarship for those opting to live on campus. “Our Direct Admissions program is a promise to the City of Fitchburg,” said Pam McCafferty, Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Success. “By removing the traditional barriers to entry, we are meeting students exactly where they are.”

Both Lor and Demeo expressed their excitement about the opportunities this program provides. Demeo noted, “When the direct admissions program came out, I was very happy that college was an option for me. It honestly doesn’t feel real yet.” Lor echoed her sentiments, stating, “Fitchburg State was the only university that I really cared about. If I really want to be serious about my future, I think Fitchburg State is the best option for me.”

The financial support offered through the program was pivotal in their decision-making. Demeo, who previously considered attending a technical school, described how the promise of waived tuition and fees opened up new possibilities. “If it wasn’t an option for me to get the tuition and fees waived, it wouldn’t have been possible for me to come to college,” she said.

Lor, a first-generation college student, plans to pursue a degree in business marketing. He expressed his excitement about being able to contribute to his community through education. “Having all the fees waived, that’s really big for me to attend a really high-tier college for free,” he shared. “It will open up a lot of doors and opportunities for me around here or anywhere.”

Demeo intends to major in business administration with a focus on entrepreneurship and innovation. She looks forward to engaging in campus life through clubs, including the Dance Club and Book Club. “Fitchburg State is an amazing school. The university has so many programs that make it a no-brainer to come here,” she said.

The admissions team at Fitchburg State is dedicated to supporting students throughout their journey. “We take immense pride in being a university that truly cares—one that listens to and meets every student where they are,” said Eliezer Rivera, Assistant Director of Admissions. “Success isn’t just about the first day of classes; it’s about the unwavering support we provide every step of the way.”

The direct admissions initiative is poised to make a lasting impact on the Fitchburg community by ensuring that higher education is no longer a privilege but a right for local students. As the program unfolds, it promises to create a pathway for many more students, offering them the chance to achieve their academic and career aspirations.
