Actor Eric Dane was unable to attend the ALS Network’s Champions for Cures and Care Gala on January 24, 2025, where he was to receive the Advocate of the Year award. The organization announced that Dane had to cancel his appearance due to the debilitating effects of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
In a statement released by the ALS Network, they expressed their regret, noting, “The ALS Network has been informed that Eric Dane had hoped to join us this evening to accept his Advocate of the Year Award, but due to the physical realities of ALS, he is not well enough to attend.” The organization acknowledged Dane’s ongoing commitment to raising awareness about ALS, highlighting their “deep gratitude for his courage, advocacy, and continued commitment to the ALS community.”
To honor Dane, Aaron Lazar, a fellow actor diagnosed with ALS, was present to accept the award on behalf of the Grey’s Anatomy star. This latest cancellation follows another missed opportunity for Dane, who had to forgo an on-stage reunion with former co-star Jesse Williams at the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards after experiencing an accident at home that required stitches.
In a candid reflection, Dane shared his disappointment with The Washington Post, stating, “ALS is a nasty disease. … So I was in the hospital during the Emmys getting stitches put in my head. I missed an opportunity I was really looking forward to.” He expressed his regret about not being able to reconnect with his peers during the awards ceremony, which he had anticipated as a special moment.
Dane publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. He spoke about the importance of family during this challenging time, noting that he is grateful to have his two children, Billie and Georgia, by his side as he navigates life with this neurodegenerative condition. The actor shares his children with Rebecca Gayheart, whom he married in 2004.
Despite the challenges posed by ALS, Dane continues to pursue his acting career. He returned to television in November 2025, portraying a firefighter with ALS in an episode of the series Brilliant Minds. During a virtual panel discussion in December, he reaffirmed his dedication to his profession, stating, “I have no reason to be in a good spirit at any time, but I’m not about to concede my purpose for some disease.”
Dane’s journey highlights both the personal struggles associated with ALS and his determination to maintain his professional aspirations. His advocacy efforts are a reminder of the ongoing fight against this debilitating disease, as well as the importance of community support for those affected.
