Nearly 900 eighth graders participated in the inaugural Academy Quest event at the Lawton Public Schools Life Ready Center. This initiative aimed to engage future high school students by showcasing a variety of career offerings available through the center. Students had the chance to engage in hands-on activities, including rocket building, metal welding, and even creating innovative business products using everyday materials like paper clips.
The Academy Quest served as a platform for students to explore potential career paths and academic courses. By allowing participants to engage in practical experiences, the event aimed to spark interest in fields such as engineering, technology, and entrepreneurship. Students were able to rotate through different stations, each designed to highlight specific skills and industries.
One of the standout activities involved constructing small rockets, which not only demonstrated principles of physics but also encouraged teamwork and problem-solving. Additionally, the welding station provided insights into the craftsmanship required in various trades, while the business product creation activity challenged students to think creatively and develop marketable ideas.
With the participation of 900 students, the Academy Quest successfully drew attention to the diverse opportunities available at the Life Ready Center. According to Lawton Public Schools representatives, the event is part of a broader strategy to prepare students for the workforce by integrating practical experiences with academic learning.
Feedback from attendees highlighted the event’s success in making career exploration both engaging and educational. Many students expressed excitement about the possibility of pursuing interests sparked by the activities. Teachers and facilitators noted that this kind of exposure is essential in helping students make informed decisions about their educational and career trajectories.
The Academy Quest is expected to become an annual event, aiming to expand its reach and offerings in future iterations. Lawton Public Schools plans to continue enhancing its programs at the Life Ready Center, ensuring that students are well-prepared for high school and beyond. This initiative represents a significant step towards fostering a more skilled and informed generation ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s workforce.
