On March 17, 2024, Conserving Carolina and the Landrum Library will present a free lecture titled “A Few Stops on a Walk Around the Yard (and Beyond),” featuring Dr. Mike Ferro, an entomologist and Collection Manager for the Plant and Environmental Sciences Department at Clemson University. The event is scheduled for 18:00 local time at the Landrum Library, located at 111 East Asbury Drive, Landrum.
This engaging program will delve into the fascinating world where manicured lawns transition into deep forests. Attendees can expect to uncover a variety of topics, including history, fashion, ecological practices, and the interactions of insects and birds with blooming plants. Dr. Ferro will guide participants through a brisk exploration of the lawn’s history, sharing vivid tales of nature and offering ecological insights that encourage a bit of unconventional thinking.
Interactive Learning Experience
Participants will also receive an introduction to observing and collecting insects, relying solely on cameras and careful observation. No prior experience is necessary; all that is required is a willingness to explore and look closely at the natural world.
This lecture is part of the monthly Speaker Series organized by Conserving Carolina and the Landrum Library. Following this event, the next program will take place on April 21, 2024. Dr. Wade Worthen, a Professor of Biology at Furman University, will present “Our Vanishing Biodiversity and How to Save It,” focusing on the unseen insects that inhabit our environment.
