Porterville College’s Cultural Historical Awareness Program (CHAP) will host a significant panel discussion on end-of-life care, titled “Death and Dying: The Role of Hospice.” Scheduled for February 24 at 19:00 in the PC Forum, this event aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of hospice care.
The panel features a multidisciplinary team from Bristol Hospice, which will explore not only the medical aspects of end-of-life care but also the emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs of patients and their families. This holistic approach seeks to enhance the quality of life for individuals facing serious illness.
Among the panelists is Jennifer Franco, the Hospice Liaison at Bristol Hospice, who serves as the primary contact for families. She emphasizes community education regarding the transition from curative to comfort measures, helping families to navigate this challenging process.
Another key participant is Richard Freitas, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Freitas aids families in understanding the dynamics of the end-of-life process and offers coping strategies that can ease the emotional burden during this difficult time.
Vicente Pacheco, the RN Clinical Supervisor, will address common misconceptions surrounding hospice care. His insights will clarify the clinical criteria for receiving hospice services, dispelling myths that may hinder families from seeking necessary support.
Additionally, Thomas Olson, a Spiritual Advisor and pastor, will discuss the importance of spiritual support. He provides comfort to patients and their families as they navigate the various stages of transition, reinforcing the need for holistic care.
This panel discussion is free and open to students, faculty, and the public, making it an invaluable opportunity for community members to learn about hospice philosophy and available resources during life’s most challenging moments.
