Buffalo Public Schools (BPS) welcomed students back to the classroom today, marking the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year. Superintendent Pascal Mubenga addressed the media at Houghton Academy, conveying a message of optimism and commitment to student success.
In his remarks, Mubenga acknowledged the diverse experiences within the school district. “We have schools that are really doing well. We also have schools that may have some challenges as well,” he stated. He emphasized the importance of believing in every student, urging teachers and school leaders to focus on collective achievement. “By the end of the year, we’re all going to come and be able to celebrate,” he added.
Mubenga expressed enthusiasm for engaging directly with students and teachers throughout the school year. He aims to foster an environment of open communication, stating, “I don’t believe in this hierarchy stuff, so I’m going to flatten the organization a little bit so teachers, when they see me in the buildings, they can talk to me.”
The superintendent’s visit to Houghton Academy is part of a broader initiative. Over the first two days of classes, he plans to visit multiple schools within the district, reinforcing his commitment to connecting with the community.
As students return to their classrooms, the emphasis on collaboration and support aligns with BPS’s goals for the year ahead. The district aims to create a positive learning environment where all students can thrive, regardless of their backgrounds.
