Nicole Petersen, principal of Brentwood Middle School in Greeley, has been awarded the title of 2026 Colorado Middle-Level Principal of the Year by the Colorado Association of Secondary School Principals. This recognition comes in the wake of her successful leadership over the past 13 years, during which she has transformed the school from a low-performing institution to one that consistently meets and exceeds state educational standards.
When Petersen took charge, Brentwood was designated as being in priority improvement status by the Colorado Department of Education. Today, the school boasts a reputation for excellence, having achieved accolades such as being named a “School to Watch” three times and receiving the Colorado Department of Education Center of Excellence award on two occasions. Under her guidance, Brentwood has flourished, serving approximately 585 students with a dedicated team of around 40 certified staff members.
Impact on Student Engagement and Learning
Petersen’s educational journey began in the classroom, where she taught language arts for seven years at University Schools, including both middle and high school levels. She also served as an assistant principal at Greeley Central High School for four years. This diverse experience has shaped her understanding of how school systems operate and how to meet all students’ needs.
Brentwood Middle School offers a range of programs and clubs, including the International Baccalaureate program. Petersen emphasizes the importance of engaging students in various activities, from sports to robotics and music, stating, “It’s our job to help them figure out where their passion is.” Her commitment to fostering a culture of exploration and inclusivity is evident in the school’s environment.
District 6 Superintendent Deirdre Pilch praised Petersen’s leadership, noting her ability to create a caring and supportive culture at Brentwood. “She is devoted to knowing all her students and ensuring they have the support they need to be successful,” Pilch remarked in a news release. “The change she has helped lead at Brentwood is remarkable.”
Acknowledging Team Efforts and Future Aspirations
Despite receiving the prestigious award, Petersen attributes her success to the collective efforts of her students and staff. “All of the schools in our system really believe in relationships and rigor and this relentless hope and how it can change outcomes for kids,” she said. Her recognition comes closely on the heels of another District 6 achievement, with Stephen Paulson being named the first Colorado Teacher of the Year from the district just two months earlier.
The selection process for the Principal of the Year award involves nominations from educators across Colorado. Candidates are required to complete a comprehensive application, including references from students, parents, and district leaders, which are then reviewed by the Board of Directors for the Colorado Association of Secondary School Principals. This rigorous evaluation culminates in finalist interviews to determine the recipient.
Petersen’s vision for Brentwood Middle School continues to focus on fostering joy, belonging, and a strong belief in the capabilities of both staff and students. Her leadership serves as an inspiration within the educational community, highlighting the profound impact that dedicated educators can have on their schools and students’ futures.
