More than 300,000 students from Chicago Public Schools returned to classrooms on August 14, 2023, and many did so in style, thanks to a back-to-school celebration hosted by Angel Reese, a star player for the Chicago Sky. The event took place at International Sports Chicago on the city’s Northwest Side, attracting a large crowd eager to kick off the new academic year.
The celebration featured live music, delicious food, and, naturally, basketball. Approximately 2,000 students received complimentary Reebok backpacks filled with essential school supplies. In addition to the festivities, Reese offered words of encouragement, inspiring students to pursue their dreams and emphasizing that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
Community Engagement and Support
Simultaneously, the Chicago Teachers Union held its third annual Back-to-School Summer Jam on the Near West Side. Dr. Diane Castro, the union’s elementary functional vice president, expressed enthusiasm for community involvement, stating, “We are always really excited to give back to the community for our students, our families. We love having them out here.”
Families benefited from a range of free offerings, including food and entertainment, while also preparing students for the school year with school supply giveaways and thousands of complimentary books. Teacher Yexx Lajeune highlighted the purpose of the event, noting, “We do this so they can have spirit, motivation, and confidence into the new school year.”
The Summer Jam also provided a unique opportunity for children to enjoy a fresh haircut, ensuring they felt confident for their first day back at school. The combination of community support and high-profile involvement from figures like Reese showcases the strong commitment to educational success and student well-being in Chicago.
As the new school year begins, events like these play a crucial role in fostering a sense of community, encouraging student engagement, and equipping young learners with the tools they need for success.
