Alvernia University has appointed a new member to its board of trustees and named a new chairperson. On October 23, 2023, the university announced that Timothy J. Daley, a graduate of the class of 1979, has joined the board, and Michael Duff has been selected as the new chairperson.
Timothy J. Daley, who serves as the executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Berks County, brings over 40 years of leadership experience in public safety, education, and nonprofit management to the board. In his current role, he has notably expanded homeownership opportunities for low-income families, securing more than $1.6 million for the Buttonwood Gateway Project and various neighborhood revitalization efforts in Reading, Pennsylvania.
Daley’s career includes significant contributions in criminal justice and school safety. He has held positions with the 23rd Judicial District of Pennsylvania, Chester County Intermediate Unit, Reading School District, and the Reading Police Department. His expertise also includes co-authoring public safety training guides and providing expert testimony before Congress and the Pennsylvania Legislature. He has established himself as a national voice in crisis response and safety education.
In addition to his professional achievements, Daley has been actively involved in the Alvernia community. He has served on the President’s Advisory Council and previously on both the Alumni Council and the Criminal Justice Curriculum Review Committee. His dedication to the university earned him the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2021.
Michael Duff expressed optimism about Daley’s appointment. “Tim’s long-standing service to his community, his deep ties to Alvernia, and his understanding of public systems and nonprofit leadership bring valuable perspective to our work,” he stated. “As the university continues to grow and evolve, trustees like Tim ensure we remain grounded in our mission while advancing our strategic vision.”
Daley himself conveyed enthusiasm about joining the board. “It is with great pride and genuine humility that I join the board of trustees at Alvernia University,” he remarked. “I look forward to contributing to the university’s continued growth and ensuring that the Franciscan spirit remains vibrant and enduring.”
In the leadership transition, Duff replaces Gregg Shemanski, who served as chairperson for three years. Dr. Glynis A. Fitzgerald, president of Alvernia University, acknowledged Shemanski’s significant contributions. “Alvernia University is deeply grateful for the exceptional leadership and steadfast commitment Gregg Shemanski has provided during his tenure,” she said. “His guidance has helped position the university for continued growth and innovation.”
Looking ahead, Fitzgerald expressed confidence in the new leadership. “We now look forward to working alongside Mike as we advance our agile and entrepreneurial approach to higher education,” she added. “Tim exemplifies the very best of servant leadership and reflects the true spirit of an Alvernia graduate. His unwavering dedication to the Berks County community and to Alvernia’s mission makes him an outstanding addition to our board.”
With these changes, Alvernia University aims to enhance its commitment to student success and foster regional transformation through dedicated leadership and community engagement.
