ABC 10News recently hosted a captivating reading event at Franklin Elementary School in City Heights, engaging over 70 students with delightful stories from the popular ‘Catty & Batty’ book series. The visit, which took place in October 2023, aimed to promote literacy and foster a love of reading among young learners.
Heather Bice, the principal of Franklin Elementary, expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, “It’s a really great opportunity for our students. We value literacy so much here.” The program’s highlight was the distribution of hundreds of free books, each finding a new home with eager young readers.
Students experienced the joy of choosing their own books, a vital aspect of fostering a lifelong reading habit. Research indicates that when children select their own reading material, 98% are more likely to engage with the text, making this initiative particularly impactful. The carefully curated selection of titles considered each child’s age, grade level, and cultural background, ensuring that it resonated with their interests.
The excitement multiplied when each student received a special backpack from North Island Credit Union, designed to help them carry their new literary treasures. School librarian assistant Naomi Higgins emphasized the importance of making books accessible to children. “We just try to get the kids in here and love books and get books in their hands,” she said. “Get them really excited about books, and it seems to work.”
The atmosphere at Franklin Elementary was filled with energy and smiles, reflecting the positive impact of the event. The collaboration between ABC 10News and the school’s staff, especially Principal Bice, contributed to a warm and inviting environment for the students.
Looking ahead, ABC 10News plans to continue its mission of spreading the magic of reading throughout San Diego County. As the team prepares for future visits, they aim to inspire even more students to embrace the world of literature and develop their reading skills.
