A Love Story: How a Librarian and Yacht Captain Found Each Other

In the summer of 1968, a chance encounter in Mazatlán, Mexico, sparked a remarkable love story between a Canadian librarian and a yacht captain. Beverly Carriveau, then a 23-year-old university librarian, was on vacation when she experienced an instant connection with Bob Parsons, a 30-year-old yacht captain from the United States. This moment marked the beginning of a life-changing romance that would lead them to unexpected adventures and a lasting partnership.

Beverly first spotted Bob as he stepped out of a taxi while she browsed a hotel gift shop. Captivated by his presence, she felt a “thunderbolt” pass between them, a feeling she later described as electric. Despite being in a committed relationship back home, Beverly felt an undeniable attraction and shared her experience with her friend during dinner that evening. Moments later, a waiter approached their table with a bottle of white wine from an anonymous admirer at the bar, igniting a mix of excitement and apprehension.

After accepting the drink, Beverly and her friend decided to seek out the wine’s sender. As she approached the bar, Beverly once again locked eyes with Bob, who greeted her with a smile. This led to a dinner filled with conversation and chemistry, where they quickly discovered common interests. Bob’s calm demeanor and genuine nature drew Beverly in, despite her reservations about pursuing a relationship.

Over the following week, Beverly and Bob spent nearly every day together. Although she maintained boundaries by including her friend in their outings, the chemistry between them deepened. When Bob asked for her contact information, Beverly found herself torn but ultimately decided to share her details.

Upon returning to her home in Vancouver, Canada, Beverly eagerly awaited communication from Bob. To her delight, she found a note from her roommate in her mailbox, referencing Bob’s interest. This prompted her to confront her long-term boyfriend, Doug, about her feelings for Bob. Doug, while surprised, encouraged her to explore this new connection.

As July progressed, Beverly and Bob communicated through letters, but the slow correspondence grew frustrating. When Bob’s employer’s wife invited Beverly to visit him in San Diego, she seized the opportunity, despite knowing it was a bold move. Their weekend together solidified their feelings, prompting Beverly to make a life-altering decision.

Beverly returned home and resigned from her position as a librarian, telling Doug, “I’ve met somebody.” Despite her friends and family expressing concern, she felt a strong pull toward Bob and knew she needed to explore their connection.

Arriving back in Mazatlán at the end of August 1968, Beverly and Bob were ecstatic to reunite. While Bob managed several yachts, Beverly began working informally on the boats. One day, as they were together, Bob proposed marriage. Surprised yet thrilled, Beverly agreed, and they quickly arranged to inform her parents.

In a memorable call over the radio, Beverly excitedly shared the news with her mother, who insisted on a church wedding. The couple returned to Vancouver in September, where Beverly’s mother organized a wedding celebration in just three weeks. Beverly’s friends were initially skeptical of Bob, but he won them over with a heartfelt toast at the reception, dispelling any doubts.

After their wedding, Beverly adopted Bob’s last name and they returned to Mexico. Their life together was filled with excitement, adventure, and challenges. They settled in Cabo San Lucas, where Beverly learned Spanish and began cooking on the yachts, while Bob continued to work as a captain. They developed close relationships with yacht owners and enjoyed a glamorous lifestyle.

As years passed, Beverly pursued a career as a boat agent while Bob transitioned to a yacht broker. The couple traveled extensively for work, experiencing diverse cultures and forming lasting friendships. They chose not to have children, finding fulfillment in their careers and adventures together.

Reflecting on their 52 years of marriage, Beverly expresses gratitude for the life they built. Following Bob’s passing in early 2020 due to dementia, she found comfort in the love they shared. Today, at 80 years old, Beverly continues to thrive in the yachting business and cherishes her memories of Bob.

Beverly’s story serves as a testament to the power of love and the importance of following one’s heart. She fondly recalls her father’s words on her wedding day, acknowledging the profound connection she and Bob shared. Their journey, ignited by a chance encounter in Mazatlán, remains a beautiful narrative of love, adventure, and the courage to take risks in life.
