Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) has achieved a significant milestone, entering the top 1% of global research institutions in the field of chemistry, according to the latest Essential Science Indicators (ESI) update released on November 14, 2025. This recognition highlights XJTLU’s exceptional performance, with its chemistry research citations ranking among the highest worldwide over the past decade.
The ESI, developed by Clarivate, assesses the research output of more than 11,000 journals across 22 fields of study. It provides insights into the impact of research through various metrics, including the number of published papers and the citations received. In chemistry, XJTLU has published a total of 381 papers and garnered 8,450 citations, placing it among the elite institutions globally, alongside 2,179 other ranked entities in this discipline.
Strategic Initiatives Fuel Success
Professor Li Yang, Associate Dean for Research at the School of Science, emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative research practices in achieving this prestigious ranking. “Reaching the global Top 1% in chemistry reflects not only our achievements but also the strategic research initiatives implemented within our School of Science,” she stated.
The School of Science at XJTLU has focused on investing in cutting-edge facilities and fostering an environment conducive to groundbreaking research. Professor Yang noted that the school aims to enhance its interdisciplinary efforts and align future initiatives with global trends and societal needs. Additionally, there are plans to strengthen support for early career researchers, ensuring the development of future scientific leaders.
Expanding Recognition in Multiple Disciplines
This latest accolade follows XJTLU’s entry into the ESI Top 1% for economics and business in September 2025. With the inclusion of chemistry, the university now boasts a total of six disciplines recognized in the ESI Top 1%, which include engineering, computer science, social sciences, environment/ecology, economics, and business.
The recognition from ESI underscores XJTLU’s commitment to research excellence and its growing influence in diverse fields. As the university continues to develop its academic portfolio, it remains focused on producing impactful research that addresses pressing global challenges while nurturing the next generation of scholars.
