Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, has confirmed the acquisition of five 380 MW natural gas turbines from South Korea’s Doosan Enerbility. This strategic purchase aims to support the company’s expanding supercomputer clusters, enhancing its computational capabilities. Musk announced the deal through a post on the social media platform X, emphasizing xAI’s commitment to scaling its operations significantly.
Details of the Acquisition
The announcement of xAI’s new turbines was first noted by user @SemiAnalysis_ on X. The turbines, produced by Doosan Enerbility, are part of a broader contract signed last October, which included an initial order for two turbines for a prominent U.S. tech company. Following that, Doosan confirmed a subsequent order for three additional turbines in December, further solidifying its partnership with xAI.
According to the X user, these gas turbines will power a cluster equivalent to over 600,000 GB200 NVL72 units. This development positions xAI’s facilities among the largest in the world, showcasing the company’s ambitious infrastructure goals. In response to the announcement, Musk confirmed the purchase with a succinct “True” in a post on X dated January 6, 2026.
xAI’s Growth Strategy
The turbine acquisition comes on the heels of xAI’s successful Series E funding round, which raised an impressive $20 billion, surpassing the initial target of $15 billion. This influx of capital is intended to accelerate the company’s infrastructure buildout and support the rapid development of AI products. According to a statement from xAI, the funding will “accelerate our world-leading infrastructure buildout, enable the rapid development and deployment of transformative AI products.”
Looking to the future, xAI has hinted at the launch of its upcoming frontier AI model, Grok 5. The company stated, “Grok 5 is currently in training, and we are focused on launching innovative new consumer and enterprise products that harness the power of Grok, Colossus, and X to transform how we live, work, and play.” This ambitious vision reflects xAI’s determination to remain at the forefront of AI technology and infrastructure development.
As xAI continues to grow, the acquisition of these natural gas turbines marks a significant step in its journey to establish itself as a leader in the field of artificial intelligence.
