A new grocery store is set to open in Point Loma, San Diego, as Smart & Final launches its latest location on October 25, 2023. The 25,000-square-foot store, located on Rosecrans Street, represents the chain’s innovative “smaller, faster grocery warehouse” concept. This store aims to provide a variety of groceries, convenience items, and bulk foods without the need for a membership fee.
Smart & Final currently operates over 20 stores throughout San Diego County. The new Point Loma location will replace an existing store situated at Midway Drive and Rosecrans Street. According to Anthony Hofer, the district manager for Smart & Final, the goal is to offer customers more ways to save without compromising on quality. “We’re excited to support families, small businesses, and the broader community as the neighborhood continues to evolve,” he stated in a news release.
Focus on Value and Community Support
The grocery chain, which began as a different entity in 1871, is headquartered in Commerce, near Los Angeles. Smart & Final aims to integrate itself into the changing landscape of Midway, which is described as undergoing a transformation into a walkable hub for entertainment, retail, and residential options.
The store will cater to a wide range of shoppers, from households to business customers, including restaurants and caterers. Shoppers can expect to find fresh produce, USDA-certified meats, pantry staples, beverages, cleaning supplies, and more, all available in everyday and club-sized quantities. This variety is designed to help customers stretch their budgets further.
Community Engagement and Grand Opening Promotions
In celebration of the grand opening, Smart & Final will make a donation of $20,000 through the Smart & Final Charitable Foundation to four local nonprofits: San Diego Youth Services, Mama’s Kitchen, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, and Generate Hope.
Additionally, customers shopping on opening day will receive a complimentary tote bag and will have the chance to win a gift card. With approximately 250 Smart & Final stores nationwide, the company is part of Chedraui USA, which also owns the El Super grocery chain, with locations across the southwestern United States, including San Diego, and Fiesta Mart in Texas.
