The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has initiated a resurfacing project on state Route 93, also known as Broad Street. This project stretches from 15th Street in West Hazleton to the boundary between Carbon and Luzerne counties, just outside the limits of Hazleton. The total estimated cost for the project is approximately $3,796,370, with completion anticipated by November 2025.
According to Rich Roman, the Executive of PennDOT District 4, there will be no detours during the resurfacing work; however, some lane restrictions are expected. “We’re milling the existing pavement surface, putting back new asphalt, and making drainage repairs, pipe replacements, and resurfacing the roadway,” he stated. The project is contracted to Pennsy Supply based in Harrisburg, with funding sourced from transportation budgets.
Resurfacing on this segment of Route 93 is set to commence on August 26, 2025, starting from the Banks Township line and extending to Poplar Street in Hazleton. “Paving should be done this season; everything is weather-dependent,” Roman added. The latest updates indicate that crews have already begun milling the current surface and are progressing from the Carbon County line toward the opposite end of the project.
Project Details and Future Implications
The current work on Route 93 will maintain the road’s existing configuration, meaning no additional lanes or roadway expansions are planned as part of this project. This effort is designed to connect with a previous paving project completed several years ago, which extended from 15th Street in West Hazleton into Sugarloaf Township.
Roman emphasized the importance of this project for improving local infrastructure. Resurfacing will enhance safety and driving conditions for the many residents and commuters who rely on this route daily. PennDOT’s careful planning and execution aim to minimize disruptions while enhancing the overall quality of the roadway.
As the project progresses, local officials encourage residents to stay informed about potential lane restrictions and updates to the timeline. The work on Route 93 represents a significant investment in regional infrastructure and is part of ongoing efforts to maintain and improve Pennsylvania’s roadways.
