Moonlight Companies has announced a voluntary recall of thousands of pounds of fresh peaches due to concerns over listeria contamination. The recall affects both yellow and white peaches grown in California and sold under the Moonlight and Kroger brand names at retail locations nationwide between September 16, 2023, and October 29, 2023.
The peaches were available for purchase both individually, marked with PLU stickers, and in multi-packs. These multi-packs were sold in various sizes and types of packaging, including cardboard crates, plastic bags, and plastic clamshells. Consumers are urged to inspect their refrigerators for any of the affected products, which should be discarded immediately or returned to the point of purchase for a full refund.
Details of the Recall
The recall specifically includes multi-packs of Kroger-branded yellow peaches. It is important to note that peaches labeled as organic or those grown in Washington state are not included in this recall. For the full list of UPC numbers and lot codes affected, consumers can refer to the official announcement provided by the company.
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), listeria monocytogenes can pose serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. While healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, pregnant women face heightened risks as listeria infection can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths.
As of now, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled peaches. The FDA published the recall notice on Wednesday, emphasizing that anyone who has purchased the affected peaches should not consume them.
In light of this recall, consumers are reminded to take immediate action to ensure their safety. Any purchased peaches should be discarded or returned to the store for a refund to avoid potential health risks associated with listeria contamination.
