Last-Minute Thanksgiving Shoppers Hustle in Massachusetts Grocery Stores

Shoppers in Waltham, Massachusetts, rushed to the local Market Basket on November 22, 2023, as they sought last-minute items for their Thanksgiving celebrations. The grocery store buzzed with activity, with every checkout register in use as customers hurried to gather their holiday essentials before the big day.

Parking spaces were at a premium, forcing many drivers to circle the lot in search of a spot. Despite the chaos, shoppers expressed that the effort was worthwhile to maintain their Thanksgiving traditions. Cynthia Lombardo, a local resident, filled her cart with Thanksgiving staples. She noted, “My granddaughter loves my stuffing,” highlighting the personal connections that often accompany holiday meals.

For others, the Thanksgiving meal serves as an opportunity to bring family together. Catherine Musinsky, who is hosting her entire family for the holiday, remarked, “Have a holiday that’s basically dedicated to saying thank you I think is a good thing.” The sentiment of gratitude resonated among many in the store, as they prepared to celebrate with loved ones.

Beyond family gatherings, some individuals are extending their generosity to the broader community. Ross Zagami, president of the Sons of Italy in Watertown, shared his plans to help those in need. “I just picked up 20 loaves of fresh French bread,” he said. “We invite people off the street. We spend the money; we welcome people; we want to give them a nice Thanksgiving.”

As shoppers filled their carts, they were also contending with rising grocery prices due to ongoing inflation. However, a recent report from Wells Fargo indicates that the cost of Thanksgiving dinner is expected to decrease by 2-3% this year compared to 2022. The report highlighted that the price of name-brand frozen vegetables has dropped by 15%, dinner rolls by 22%, and turkey prices have decreased by 4%. The only item that has seen a price increase is whipped cream.

For those navigating the busy shopping environment, one customer shared a simple strategy for success. “Patience. If you waited until today, you’ve got to have patience,” she advised, emphasizing the importance of staying calm amidst the holiday rush.

As Thanksgiving approaches, the scenes of bustling grocery stores illustrate not only the preparations for the feast but also the importance of community and gratitude that this holiday embodies.
