The Kansas City Chiefs have not finalized a new contract with key defensive player Trent McDuffie, who is set to earn a base salary of $2.6 million for the upcoming 2024-25 NFL season. Despite ongoing discussions over the past six weeks, an agreement has not been reached ahead of the Chiefs’ season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers in São Paulo, Brazil this Friday.
McDuffie, entering his fourth NFL season, has emerged as a crucial member of the Chiefs’ defense. The 2022 first-round draft pick is recognized as the team’s second-best defender, only behind pass rusher Chris Jones. Prior to Sunday practice, McDuffie acknowledged that he expected to complete this season under the terms of his rookie contract.
Reflecting on the contract negotiations, McDuffie stated, “Moving forward now, really, it’s just about the season and about [Friday’s] game. I’m not too worried about the contract. That can just happen in the [next] offseason. Let’s just go out there and have a great year.”
The Chiefs’ general manager, Brett Veach, commented on the situation last week, indicating ongoing dialogue with McDuffie. “We definitely have had dialogue. He’s a guy that’s obviously a special player. We’re going to continue that dialogue, and hopefully something gets worked out. I think things have been good. Trent is obviously going to be a priority,” Veach said.
During the previous season, McDuffie delivered a standout performance, recording two interceptions and 13 pass breakups—both career highs—as well as 59 tackles, four quarterback hits, and one forced fumble. His exceptional coverage skills have made him a key asset to the Chiefs’ defense, having played 996 defensive snaps last season. Notably, he lined up in press-man coverage within three yards of opposing receivers on a league-leading 63.5 percent of snaps, which is the second-highest rate for any defender with at least 250 perimeter snaps over the last seven seasons.
To secure McDuffie’s future with the team, the Chiefs exercised his fifth-year option in April, guaranteeing a salary of $13.6 million for the 2026 season. Despite the ongoing contract discussions, McDuffie remains positive about his role within the team, stating, “I love being a Chief. I know the contract stuff will come.”
As the Chiefs prepare for their season opener, all eyes will be on McDuffie, who looks to build on his previous success and contribute significantly to the team’s performance this season.
