July 4, 2025: What’s Open and Closed on Independence Day

As Americans prepare to celebrate 249 years of independence with the traditional fanfare of fireworks and barbecues, many businesses and services will observe the holiday by closing their doors. The Fourth of July, marking the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, is a federal holiday, prompting closures across various sectors. With the holiday falling on a Friday this year, it’s essential to know which places will remain open before making plans.

Grocery Stores and Retailers

For those planning to host a festive gathering, most major grocery chains will be open, albeit with some variations in hours. Target and Walmart locations will operate during their regular local hours, ensuring access to last-minute essentials. The Kroger family of stores, including Fred Meyer, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Ralphs, and QFC, will also maintain their usual hours, though it’s advisable to check specific locations for any changes.

Shoppers can also count on Whole Foods, Wegmans, and Food Lion to be open as usual. However, Trader Joe’s will close early at 5 p.m., while ALDI will shut its doors at 4 p.m. Sam’s Club will welcome Plus members from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Club members from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Conversely, Costco warehouses will be closed for the day.

Retail enthusiasts will find TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, and Marshalls open until 8 p.m., and Nordstrom, JCPenney, and Macy’s operating under normal business hours. Dollar General and Dollar Tree will also be open, though hours may vary by location. For beauty needs, Sephora and Ulta Beauty will remain open.

Pharmacies and Financial Services

Pharmacy services will be somewhat limited. CVS stores and pharmacies will be open, but some may operate on reduced hours. Walgreens stores will maintain regular hours, though most of its pharmacies — excluding 24-hour and select locations — will be closed. Rite Aid will continue to serve customers as usual.

In the financial sector, both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed in observance of the holiday. As July 4 is a Federal Reserve banking holiday, most bank branches will not be open. However, online banking services and ATMs will remain operational, providing some access to financial services.

Postal and Government Services

The United States Postal Service will not be picking up or delivering mail on Independence Day, aligning with its holiday schedule. Similarly, UPS will not offer pickup or delivery services, although UPS Express Critical will be available for urgent shipments. FedEx will largely be closed, except for its FedEx Custom Critical service, which will cater to time-sensitive deliveries.

As for government operations, nonessential government offices, including the DMV and public libraries, will be closed on Friday, reflecting the nationwide holiday observance.

Looking Ahead

The closures on July 4, 2025, highlight the continued tradition of observing Independence Day as a time for Americans to reflect on their nation’s history and values. As the holiday falls on a Friday, it offers a long weekend for many, potentially boosting travel and leisure activities. Businesses and consumers alike are advised to plan accordingly, ensuring a smooth celebration of this significant national holiday.

As always, it’s wise to verify with local retailers and service providers for specific holiday hours, as they can vary by location and region. Whether staying home or venturing out, Americans can look forward to a day of celebration and remembrance.
